Personal Effectiveness: The Meaning Of Awareness

I get these strange comments to some of my posts. I recently posted a piece on the importance of paying attention to the here and now, which made the point that it’s the only time and place that you can be – and if you couldn’t be bothered to turn up to the reality of the here and now, how can you reasonably expect to get anything much out of life. I received a comment – from someone who signed themselves as a “personal development expert” said that, OK, the here and now is all very well – but really personal development is about choice and awareness.

So, here’s the big question: What is Awareness? Let’s make it even easier – what can you be aware of at any particular point in time? Of course, you could be aware of your thoughts – most people aren’t because, as decades of research prove, most people aren’t aware of anything much at all. You could be aware that you’re feeling frustrated or fearful – but these so-called emotions are nothing more than the product of the thoughts that you’re not aware of in the first place. You could be aware of how you feel about yourself – your own self-image – but that’s not awareness, that’s getting involved in the continuous internal power struggle between you and your personality (remember, personality is dervided from the Latin word, “persona”, meaning a mask and your personality is simply the amalgamation of all the personal “snapshots” you took as a child).

Real awareness is being aware of the here and now. To paraphrase the Buddha, when I am walking, I am aware that I am putting one foot in front of the other. Only in the present moment will you find reality. In fact – scientific fact as probed by quantum physics – only in the present moment does anything exist and all that exists is changing moment to moment.

And what of the choice we must make? We have a stark choice that has a fundamental impact on our lives – we can choose to be aware or we can (and this is the mindless choice made by normal people) choose to live in a make-believe world created by our own, predominantly negative, thoughts. This is a choice that we must make time and again, in each moment because no one becomes aware and stays aware – it is a continual in exactly the same way that the reality of the world in which we live is an ongoing process.

The life you are living is how it is as a result of your action, reaction or inaction in the present moment. The normal person reacts to their own thoughts and perceptions. The extraordinarily successful person acts on the basis of the facts in the moment and, as a result, creates a life that is exciting, spontaneous, adventurous, fulfilled and successful. Now, do you think you might be up to making that choice?

We Should Make Sure We Are Living Consciously To Avert Mistakes And Disappointments

This is a place that we sometimes do not like to go as we do not like to talk about our mistakes and failures. Well, just so we all agree; these are a part of life and we know we can’t change them by talking about them; but we might teach ourselves to be knowledgeable of our actions; by reviewing why we seem to have too much of these at times in our life. Making Positive changes to overcome the dead emotions which our mistakes and failures bring is am important decision. We must deal with the present issues for us to recover and get back on the road to success once we realize we are living our life without full consciousness of our daily actions.

It is a common aspect of life and it isn’t going to change but we can correct the bad stuff by being conscious of how we are actually living our life. We get off track sometimes and some more than others. It does not have to be anything big or detrimental to living a good life but as they say “little foxes spoil the vine.” We can look back and see some places; we could have done things a whole lot better and our efforts to change will help us in the future.

There are times when we disregard signs about where we are headed and thereby, we let go of something or someone; before we gave it time to work. We fail sometimes because we look at others and what they have achieved not realizing that we cannot compare our own life to another. We must strive to listen what our heart tells us and be sure it is the right way; if that is possible. All things we do in life should have a plan, a starting point, a progression period and then when it levels off to be the normal. But I really do not think that we can ever stop guarding our behaviors, our purpose, our goals because if we stop; we get off track and make more mistakes, that have to be corrected.

When we have a relationship, we have a plan to work at it, make it beautiful, and maintain it with passion and know it takes a lot of care. Yet so many times after the new wears off, we get busy with other life things and forget to take the necessary provisions to make it as special. We forget it needs care, sometimes more later, than in when new. What do you know; somebody is unhappy out the blue. Sometimes it is too late, sometimes it can be fixed and sometimes it seems too much neglect was the final draw and we have to deal with what we call “failure.”

What is the first step to recover from mistakes or failure? Simple sometimes yet complex , but we must learn from our mistakes to live a more desirable life. Usually if we are smart we certainly know we do not want to repeat the same behaviors. We should stop living life in instinctive mode. It is said that we do not know what we are doing even half of the time as we operate our life like we do machinery and out of habit. We live in such a rush and we are programmed to just do what come natural. Sometimes natural turns into things that are not good for us and can detain us on our journey. We should start living in full consciousness and awareness. If we are to make fewer blunders in our life we have to take note of how we are living on a daily basis and decide if we need adjustments to live life better and more satisfying. We have to be conscious of how we are traveling on our journey every day and every minute.
