Can smokeless cigarettes really help you quit smoking? And what exactly are they?
I recently came across smokeless cigarettes a few months ago when a associate started smoking one during a company meeting. He got a room full of curious looks and a good amount of grief (which he thought was funny), but he then explained what it was.
At first, I wrote it off as another trendy “quit smoking” product that would come and go. As weeks passed, more and more of my colleagues started using them as an alternative to normal cigarettes. Before I knew it, we had a bunch of people smoking smokeless cigarettes in the office. Crazy I know! I couldn’t overlook it any longer so I decided to do a little exploration before I tried them myself.
It turns out that smokeless cigarettes (aka electronic cigarettes) have been around for nearly four years. It uses new technology that allows smokers to continue smoking while getting their nicotine fix, but without all of the toxic chemicals. The micro electronic cigarette companies claim that they also aid in quitting smoking also. This appears to be the case as the majority of my colleagues have not smoked a real cigarette for weeks.
When smokeless cigarettes first came out, they were much larger than they are now and weren’t attractive or appealing enough to encourage a ton of market appeal. The latest generation of e-cigarettes are known as “mini” electronic cigarettes and are the exact same size as a normal cigarette at 100mm.
The attraction of electronic cigarettes is that they contain the taste of tobacco and they create a smoke-like vapor that is basically nicotine and water so you still get the sensation that you’re smoking. Most e-cigarette models now even have an LED light at the end to create that glow we’re all so accustomed to. So, essentially, you get the same experience as smoking a cigarette, but without inhaling so many chemicals.
Electronic cigarettes contain a small battery, an atomiser and replaceable nicotine cartridge that allows you to smoke it just as you would with any other cigarette. Most kits even come with a electronic cigarette pack the same size as a pack of cigarettes so you can carry more than one e-cigarette. The nicotine chamber is easily changeable so you can switch them out when one runs out or to change flavors. Yes, there are dozens of different flavors out there. Anything from menthol to watermelon to suit your taste buds.
The biggest advantage, outside of potential health benefits, are the long term savings. Depending on the brand, you can save up to 80% as compared to buying traditional cigarettes. On average, a typical nicotine cartridge lasts as long as twenty normal cigarettes and can cost a fraction of the price. While kits will cost you a bit more up front, you should expect to start saving pretty quickly.
As weird as is it to have people smoking in the office, the bosses don’t mind because smoke breaks have pretty much been eliminated since we can puff on them at our desks. It has even been reported that they’re okay to smoke in airports as well. Not sure if I believe it, but I guess there’s no harm since there is no second hand smoke. Another benefit of no second hand smoke is no lingering smokey smell and a much better environment for non-smoker friends.
The smokeless cigarette has been picking up a lot of steam lately and for good reason. It’s healthier, cheaper, and more user friendly than traditional cigarettes. It will be interesting to see the long term effects as far as helping people quit altogether, but it’s looking pretty good so far.
