A massive 10 million cigarettes are bought every minute. Why? Lots of people say that smoking gives them a feeling of comfort and / or makes them feel more confident. Some people also say that smoking clears their mind and helps them think. Still, even though smokers have their reasons, few would deny that it damages their health. More and more people are realizing this fact and want to adopt a healthier lifestyle. The trouble with quitting is the addiction. It is not the cigarettes as a whole that are addictive, just one ‘ingredient’ that goes into them – nicotine. Those who become used to nicotine get headaches, have difficulty concentrating and feel depressed when they deprive their body of it. The solution? Nicotine gum, which is chewing gum laced with nicotine that was first introduced in the 80s. It is now the most popular quit smoking aid.
Nicotine-laced gum can these days be bought in most chemists and pharmacies. Doctors recommend using the gum for up to 12 weeks. After that time, you should speak with your physician if you still feel the need to smoke. Unfortunately, some smokers find themselves becoming addicted to the nicotine gum. In a sense, people kick one habit and trade it for another. You may ask – “Is that bad?” Whilst no addiction is good for someone, it is clearly better to be addicted to something that provides minimal risk to your health. Remember that is not actually the nicotine in cigarettes that causes all of the health problems associated with smoking. The reason cigarettes are so unhealthy is because of the thousands of chemicals added to them by the manufacturers. These chemicals are not found in nicotine gum.
Nicotine gum always gives your body nicotine in a more sensible way, as the levels of the stimulant are lower, and it slow enters your body over an hour or so, rather than just 5 minutes. Do not be fooled into thinking that nicotine gum is an easy solution to your cigarette habit though, as it is not. The longer you use the gum, the more addicted to it you will be, and more similar the withdrawal symptoms will be to those faced when quitting smoking. This specialized gum is not cheap either. You can expect to be paying upwards of $5 for one pack of nicotine gum, and you get addicted to it then you may find yourself buying a couple of packs of it a day. It is a step in the right direction though, so first deal with quitting cigarettes, and then deal with quitting nicotine gum at a later date. Hopefully though, the gum addiction will not even arise – for most people it does not.
